The Friends You Choose in College.

While I was still a youth leader, I tried to challenge my girls to keep seeking Jesus in college. I would tell them things like:

*you may meet your bridesmaids and life long girl friends in college.
*your husband may be the guy you start dating in college.
*don't mess these years up because they matter (although of course, God's grace is always enough, no matter how much we mess up!!!)

I have to say that after being removed from college for 9 years now, I really did try to live those above statements! I was involved in things like InterVarsity and Young Life.

Here, Hutch and I were living in Florida (kid-less). Can you tell by my brown skin (that has now turned into brown spots!)?

And, this pic from 1 year ago! We now have 7 kids among our group!

So thankful for my college friendships that will last a lifetime!

The final UPWARD game was this past Saturday. Parents were instructed to make signs. Of course with all that's been going on around here, I forgot! So, I found a piece of paper and a crayon in the car and made do. Little did I know, my silly sign would actually be the only sign. Apparently I was the only mom participating!

Being the final game, parents got to get involved. Have I mentioned I love UPWARD? This was a game of Parents Vs Kids, except parents had to play on their knees.

Bubba got a little too into it!

A Weekend Away

This weekend I met up with my 3 best friends from college. I think we all would agree that it's just what we needed. It's was a beautiful thing to reconnect with some of my dearest friend's hearts.

We ate (a lot!), window shopped, talked until we couldn't talk anymore, slept in, had breakfast in bed, etc. We talked about stuff that really matters, like how being a SAHM can be boring and lonely sometimes and also what we're learning from the Lord.

One thing I really took away from the overnight was the importance of having a community: a group of dear friends who you live life with! God longs for us to receive this blessing, and it's just so sad that so many people live without it.

Stephanie (the beautiful blonde!) has been through 3 difficult and amazing years, documented here. Her son, Oliver started having seizures around 18 months and continues to have them today. Her Christian Community (and the Lord) have held her up and given her life. It just wouldn't be possible without those things!

I couldn't have asked for a better weekend! Hopefully we'll get all of our kiddos together this summer, like we've done in the past. Cheers!

Monday morning we woke up and went sledding behind the house!

A Day of Skiing

What a fun weekend we had! We went with our friends The Coles. Their boys are each 6 months older than our 2, so it's always a perfect blend! Isn't it nice when families mix well?!

The youngins were SO patient as they waited for their brothers to get all geared up and on the slopes.

Finally after an hour of waiting in lines and getting ready, they headed out!

I have lots of memories of wearing snow gear as a child. And, one of them is trying to get up after falling down. It's nearly impossible. I can remember my dad lifting me straight up to my feet again!

Bubba found a worm at our mountain house. Sissy wasn't impressed.

Our sweet friends, Ashley & Katherine, have started a tradition of celebrating Valentine's with my kiddos and our cousins here! We went over Ashley's house on Sunday for crafts and cookie decorating!

So sweet of Ash to think of my kiddos, even when she doesn't have any of her own (yet!!)!

Bubba's School Valentines

We've been holding onto broken crayon pieces for a while. So, when we got a school note saying Bubba needed Valentines, we got right to work! Bubba is super sensitive towards his girl who has Diabetes, so we tried to do a non-sugar Valentine.

Here's how to make crayons from crayon pieces. The hardest part is peeling the crayons. I would use an exacto knife, if I were you! But, since I'm not you, I didn't use one. It took me at least 30 minutes to peel our crayons, and my fingernails still hurt!

Fill the cups until you get some cool colors together.

Bake them in a muffin tin on 250 for about 10 minutes, until they are melted (not firm yet). This picture is from about 10 minutes after they'd come out of the oven. Then I put them in the freezer for 5 minutes and they easily pop out!

Of course, presentation is everything. So, I found a "YOU COLOR MY WORLD" topper!!

Finding the Magic in the every day!!!

Last week I decided to make my MIL's infamous sugar cookies. She had even sent me a rolling pin cloth thing to make my sugar cookie adventures THAT much easier! So, I made the dough the night before and all looked awesome. Then, I cut out my first batch and it was magical. That cloth really does work. Nothing stuck anywhere and I had beautiful heart shaped cookies, ready to be baked.

Well, I baked the first batch and they looked a little brown. I decided to keep going because I'm just like that. No need to stop and think, just keep trucking along! So I rolled, cut out, and baked all 5 dozen hearts. They were beautiful, just dark. I made Mimi's yummy icing and sat down to test one.

That's when I realized that something went terribly wrong. The brown wasn't just a tiny flaw.

I had used whole wheat flour instead of just the normal kind. I was so upset I could have cried. I had spent my 2 hour "rest time" baking and all for nothin'.

After mourning for 2 days, I finally realized that my family would still enjoy decorating them. So, we got out paint brushes and got right to work.

Just like at Christmas-time, decorating cookies is magical in our house. We are all quiet and ice our hearts out. And, using paint brushes makes it even more fun!

Sissy tried one and didn't seem to mind the whole wheat flour one bit!

**Just thought I should add a sidenote here. 6 years ago, messes made me crazy. I was truly a neat freak in every single way. It was to the point of annoyance though! As soon as guests would leave our house, I'd vacuum and wipe the entire house down (even though I just had before they arrived.) Having 2 kids has broken me of this trait. I still do like a clean house, but the temporary messes no longer phase me!

You can't see it, but Sissy had actually dropped an entire thing of homemade oil and vinegar dressing all over the beadboard. So, between that and the dyed icing, I spent an hour wiping things clean! But, it's SO worth it!

trying to MAKE THE MOST OF EVERY OPPORTUNITY

We really do try as parents to make the most of every opportunity. So, when a friend posted this idea on her blog, I just had to copy her. That is, also, one thing you should learn about me. I am not always creative, but I am good at stealing!

If you're familiar with the Bible, you may recognize these verses. They come from 1 Corinthians 14. This chapter talks about what LOVE (ie: God) is and isn't. And, guess what, there are exactly 14 of them, so why not make a countdown chain to Valentine's!!!

Love is patient.
Love is kind.
Love does not envy.
Love does not boast.
Love is not proud.
Love does not dishonor others.
Love is not self-seeking.
Love is not easily angered.
Love does not keep record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth.
Love always protects.

Love always perserveres.

Each night at the dinner table, we talk about one. Hutch and I try to give examples from our day where we were and weren't patient or kind. We, also, try to speak truth to them by telling them that "Bubba is patient" "Sissy is kind".

I once heard that it's important to put a crown on their head and let them grow into it. So, daggone it, I will call Bubba patient until he actually is!

Grocery Shopping ONCE a month

For a couple months now, I only grocery shop one time per month. It is a huge shopping trip, but so worth it. I started it in an effort to save a little money. But, I've realized it has so many benefits. Here are a couple:

*I have 15-18 options for dinners every night.
*Because my shopping trip is so huge, I rarely buy anything that's not on my list.
*I use almost everything in my freezer and pantry every month.
*I rarely have to throw things away because they've rotten.
*Fruits and veggies last a lot longer than I had thought.

Anyway, one thing I do as soon as I bring my month's groceries home is organize all the meats. I had to laugh at this picture because the meats really feel organized, although the picture looks like a mess!

I lay all my meats out flat and stack them.

I highly recommend shopping this way! Shopping day feels a little overwhelming, but then you're set for an entire month!

Oh BOY!

If there's one thing our Bubba loves these days, it's changing clothes. In fact, so much so, that we've had to make a house rule: 2 outfits per day. More than 2 is too much for this mama to keep up with.

The other day, he had Sis up there for a while, and they came down like this:

"Mom, we're cowboys!" Not a great look for my girl! And, what a nerdy Bubba!

Practicing at Home

Every Friday night, we play family basketball in the living room! It all started after Bubba's first Upward game, when we realized he had no clue how to play. Well, it has become one of our favorite things.

So, this past Friday night, Bubba wanted to announce everyone (like they do in Upward & real basketball! This is the cutest thing in the world. They turn on music and each player gets announced and runs to their seats, as the parents cheer glowingly!). So, he stood at the bottom of the stairs with his sis, dressed appropriately in "no sleeve" shirts, gym shorts, and tennis shoes. Then, he called me and I ran down. Next he called Daddy, who took a while, but didn't disappoint with his "no sleeve" shirt, shorts and do-rag!

P.S. Sis never takes her eyes off of him. It's precious!

Pastie Pie Recipe

Hi all! Sorry I haven't posted for 2 days. I honestly forgot. How in the world I forgot, I'll never know. I guess there's not been much going on. Sissy and I have spent hours this week playing babies, and other than that, we've just been hanging!

But, I'm baaaaccckkkkk!!! (It was so sweet of some of you to ask and want me back! I feel humbled!!)

Here's my grandma's Pastie Pie Recipe! It is a meat pie and it's a family fav! (Having a sweet almost-3-year-old helper is a must!)

Slice 2 packs of stir fry beef into 1" pieces. Peel and slice 3 potatoes thin. And, chop 3 bunches of green onion. Then, layer all of that twice into a pie shell (I cheat and use Pillsbury pie crusts).

My potatoes look like that because I was completely lazy and used my apple slicer!

Cover with the second pie shell and bake on 350 for about 1.5 hours (I normally check it at an hour and 15, and it's ready.

Granola Bar Recipe, as promised!

Here is the recipe for the yummy bars I made. I halfed the sugar and reduced the honey too, because my guys aren't lovers of honey!

Here and here are two more recipes too. I haven't tried either of these, but I don't think you can go wrong with these things! And, my motto is: if it's homemade, it must be better for you than packaged, right?!

**The only one that needs a story is the 2nd one. For several months, every Friday Sissy and I would go to Bubba's "School Lunch". We stopped that a while ago (per Bubba's request!), but Sissy still refers to his entire school as "School Lunch"!

I must admit, I thought it was weird when moms would sneak healthy foods into their kid's meals. I thought, "Why wouldn't you just get them to actually eat it instead." But, now that I've done the mom thing for 6 years now, I realize a couple things.

#1. I didn't know everything. I should've waited til I had kids to say what I'd do and not do!
#2. Why not add some veggies in there, especially if they'll never ever know!
#3. Kids just want to be kids (ie: eating crap!). So, go to #2 again!

This looks like the start to a delicious smoothie, right?

Just add spinach, kale, parsley, wheat germ, flax seed, and almond meal on top! I ABSOLUTELY PROMISE they'll NEVER taste it.

It's so nice to know my kids got LOTS of fruits and veggies before ever stepping out the door every morning!

Come on, doesn't this look just like a normal purple smoothie? You should try adding some spinach; it tastes just the same!

My Annual Target Purchase

Here's a fun little tradition we've done for a couple years now! We put these Valentine's mailboxes on the counter and then secretly fill them with notes, treats, or presents throughout the weeks leading up to Valentine's.

(Labeling Gone Bad: I was not smart enough to think through red label on red box, so you can't see Sissy and my names!)

Do You Have a Plan?

Moving on!

Do you have a plan? A Parenting plan? What do you do when your kid, let's say, screams or is unkind or disobeys? Having a plan works every time! Our behavior specialist gave us another awesome system: "Smart Discipline for Parents".

Here's the short of it, if you don't have time to read the book: It's a simple 8 square chart. The first 3 squares are blank and then 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 have penalities written in them.

At the bottom write out 3 rules. Our our: 1. Be Kind 2. Have Self Control 3. Obey...encompasses everything, huh!!! Then, you'll also want to type: What I did well yesterday: and What I could work on today:

Every time your child messes up, you put an X in that square, so obviously the first 3 mess ups are free. Then, by the 4th mess up, he loses a priviledge. The priviledges go in order from least to worst. So, ours goes: 4 dessert, 5 playground, 6 visiting Nana/Mimi/etc, 7 no going outside, and 8 in bedroom for the rest of the day.

With any plan, you have to be consistent. We aren't allowed to give warnings at all. If Bubba chooses to be unkind, he simply gets an X. We don't overreact, we just get our pencil writing! He can never erase an X either.

Our charts used to be filled almost full. Nowadays, Bubba is learning self control and is getting more and more with just one X! It is beautiful!

Organized Linen Closet

I know January tends to be an organizing month for many. I can tell when I walk down Walmart and Target aisles that it's the season. Well, here I am in the middle of the month, finally getting around to it!

The best part is: I got a Cricut machine for Christmas, so I'm going crazy labeling things!

Somehow I was able to give away 3 FULL trash bags of stuff from this small closet. Doesn't it just look so organized now!!

I'm on a mission. Next is labeling the playroom sections. The labels are easy to peel off, and leave no mark, so I'm going for it!!! I may just label everything!

Being a Princess

While Bubba and Daddy were at a Chuck E Cheese Birthday party on Saturday, I took Sis to The Disney Store for a Princess craft. The princesses were instructed to dress as princesses, which Sissy was totally excited about. Wearing a huge bow the size of your head was optional.

Carpe Diem

I read this post a while back and had to share, but first let me be vulnerable!!

No matter what my blog seems to portray, I actually do not love every single second of parenting (especially Bubba...just being vulnerable here, right!). There are many moments where I feel tired, unmotivated, and guilty. But, I've realized in my 6 years as a Mama that I don't have to enjoy every single second. There are magical moments, and I enjoy those for sure!

Homemade Applesauce

My friend Jane's Dad makes this incredible applesauce, so I had to give it a whirl. It's so simple and perfect.

I used my handy apple slicer (which I LOVE) and peeled/cored 3 bags of mixed apples.

Then, I put them all in a pot with about 3 cups water, 30 shakes cinnamon, and 1.5 cups sugar. (I also added Almond Meal, from Trader Joes, because I'm crazy like that and add protein to everything!)

Bring it to a boil. Then, let it simmer however long you want. I wanted mine chunky, so I just let it simmer about 45 minutes. I did mash it just a bit until it looked perfect for my liking!

My sister-in-law just gave me a recipe for applesauce, where you add Hot Tamales. So, that's next on my list! Do you add anything fun to your applesauce?

Baby Daisy

Sissy has a love affair with her babies! It's by far her most favorite thing to play with! Just recently she's really become attached to Baby Daisy! Baby Daisy has been around for 20-some years!

This is me (in the bright yellow polka dot shirt) holding Baby Daisy when I was 8 years old...maybe I WAS a little old to be toting around a baby doll, but I loved her! I really felt like a mama with Baby Daisy!

Upward

This morning was our first ever experience with UPWARD. Bubba is playing Basketball with his buddy Blake! It has been such a fun, organized and encouraging environment.

They really teach them how to play, like with real basketball terms!

And, at the end of the game, they give each child a star to iron on their shirt. Each star has a meaning, like "Sportsmanship" or "Christ-likeness". It is wonderful; these kids are not only learning a sport, but they're learning how to live their lives too! Okay, I'll get off my soapbox now, but so far, we are impressed!!

6 Year Molars

Bubba's 6 Year Molars have made their break through! (Sorry for another boring post; I'm actually enamored with the fact that after 6 years, 4 new teeth poke through!).

Did you know you never lose your 6 year molars? Yep, your back 4 teeth have been there ever since you were 6ish! So, make sure your 5.5-6 year old knows they're back there to brush them WELL! Our dentist said they are the first ones to get cavities because parents don't even know they've arrived.

Okay, I declare this post as the most boring ever! Sorry about that! Maybe I'll think of something creative for tomorrow (maybe not too!)!

The Stamina of a Mama

Today it hit me how, as a Mama, I never sit. It hit me especially hard this morning because I STILL have a cold. This morning I woke up feeling like I was hit by a truck...a Big Mac Truck (That's a lotta "hits" in one paragraph!

This morning alone, here's what I've done:

-served breakfast
-cleaned up breakfast
-went to eat my cereal, and kids wanted some
-served cereal
-cleaned up cereal
-helped Sissy with a puzzle 20x
-got set up for painting rocks
-painted rocks for 5 minutes
-Bubba spilled my diet coke all over a (small) carpet
-cleaned up my diet coke
-put carpet in washer
-cleaned up painting rocks
-did 6 loads of laundry
-answered "Mom, can we ride our bikes on the road, not the sidewalk?" at least 35x.
-finally put away MY clean laundry from last week (just in time to have more clean laundry)

It's only 11 a.m., and I'm exhausted from thinking about all we've done! But, such is life as a Mama! They are amazing creatures, in my opinion. It's not that they even try to be; they somehow innately do it all. And, as One myself, I truly am thankful for every day. The good and the bad!

So, here's to being a selfless Mama in 2012! Ya ready?

My 2011 Shutterfly Book

Every year I ask Hutch to give me 12 hours for Christmas! 12 hours to complete our annual Shutterfly book. It is truly one of my favorite things...to reflect and remember all the things that happened in one year. As I make the book, I'm constantly saying things like, "Can you believe that was just one year ago?" and "Look how big you've gotten"!

My kids love the book as much as I do. They look at it all year. We've come up with a rule though that only adults are allowed to turn the pages:) It's not that I want it to stay perfect, because I know that won't happen. It's just hard watching my 12 hours of work get ripped. (The nice thing about creating an online book is that it can be reproduced in a click of a button. But, they are not cheap!!)

I, also, made a book of all Bubba's artwork this year. Writing and coloring is truly his favorite thing to do, so when a FREE Shutterfly book coupon came my way, I just had to use it. I simply took pictures of his artwork (which is just as good as scanning, in my opinion) and threw a book together.

I make the 12x12 books and they stack nicely every year. I would say Shutterfly's picture quality is just okay. I don't even worry about using edited pictures because they don't upload. But, I really like the convenience of their books, so I use them anyway!

Christmas Eve with Santa

Our NEW homemade LEGO table!!!

I found this rad lego table on Pinterest a while back, and my handy hubby made it for Christmas! It is just 2 bins (that will be labeled soon, thanks for my new Cricut machine!) with a nicely cut piece of wood as the table top, topped with three 12x12 lego squares.

We've spent the majority of today working on an space station (because we're nerds like that). I actually have no idea what happens at the space station, but we came up with what WE'D want in our very own space station!

Things got very intriquite the longer we worked on it!

In the end, we made the following "rooms" at our space station (from left to right): (And P.S. I'm well aware that my dear friend Andria is the only one really checking out each individual room. She's just awesome like that! You're all awesome too!)

Christmas Morning

Somehow every year on Christmas Bubba (who is our early riser) sleeps in! Around 7:10, he woke up which meant we were waking Sissy up immediately!

We made them wait at the top of the stairs while we did the whole "Oooh, ahhhhh, wow!" from below. We waited for Nana and PopPop to arrive, and then let them come on down!

Sissy instantly ran to her new double stroller. When you love dolls like she does, you definitely need a double, possibly a triple stroller!

For months, Bubba's been asking for a trumpet. As his summer camp this past summer, his coach played a salute every morning and afternoon. It got Bubba hooked!

Bubba's Xmas Program

On Wednesday Bubba had his Christmas program. It was cute, as usual! He is shockingly a little reserved when it comes to singing loud in front of crowds. He sings, but his mouth barely moves! (and, if you know our Bubba, this is not a problem elsewhere!).

After the program, we went back to the classroom to mingle.

Christmas Card Pics

The Good News: I had a blast taking Christmas card pictures this season! It was the first time ever I've charged. It was humbling to think Little Old Me is considered a PHOTOGRAPHER in some people's eyes! It was even more humbling to realize many people went to print their pictures and were asked for a Copyright Release. Wow!

The Bad News: My camera is at the end of its life. I have used it to its fullest, to say the least. Once cameras get to about 100,000 pictures, they are finished. The funny thing is: if I could buy my exact same camera again, I would. I'm just so comfortable with it! I know they've created WAY better ones, but I'm stuck on mine!

Our magical Christmas moment FINALLY happened!! It wasn't in the Gingerbread House decorating. Nor was it in the Wrapping Paper decoration. Sissy and I had made sugar cookie cut outs one morning was Bubba was at school. We spontaneously decided to decorate ALL of them after dinner last week. And, it was MAGICAL indeed!

You see, the magic doesn't always come when you want it to. But, if you quit trying, it'll sneak its way in!

The kids iced and sprinkled for what felt like hours. I'm sure in reality it was a solid 30 minutes.

I tried hard not to micro-manage. It DOESN'T really matter if they put too little icing or too much sprinkles, does it?

Or, if they stop halfway to eat an entire jar of sprinkles? Nope, doesn't matter one bit BECAUSE it's magical daggone it!

As long as it makes them happy, I'm okay with the mess!

And, that my friends was our one magical Christmas memory this year. I am well aware that next year this one probably won't work. But, like I always say: make the most of every opportunity!

Sorry I've been MIA from the blog. I've been spending every minute on our neighborhood Gift Gallery. It was last night, and was so fun! It's overwhelming and fun to put an event like this together.

2 of my favorite things from the evening: the BUSY kid's craft room and the VERY BUSY marshmallow shooter table

In the craft room, they made ornaments and iced waffle cones as Christmas trees

The story behind this table is oh so sweet. Bubba decided last week that he'd like to do a table and have all the money go towards a Compassion cow. You see, we had gotten one of those flyers a couple weeks ago, saying you could purchase a gift for a family. Ever since then, he hasn't forgotten. So, he raised enough money to buy a cow and 4 Bibles. Yep, he's my hero (Remember: I get to tell the GOOD on this blog. I'm refraining from the UGLY today!).

Every year I get my kids to paint wrapping paper. It is so fun to give someone a gift that is covered in love! This year got messy when we made footprint reindeer and sponged trees!

And this wrapping paper activity fits into our UNmagical category, just like our UNmagical gingerbread houses last week. (Our lovely shoes to hold the paper down.)

I think there's something to be said for magical moments. Most of the time, they just happen. But, taking something that was magical last year and trying to recreate it doesn't always work.

So, we'll see what kind of magic happens at our household. But, I can tell you one thing: it wasn't in the Gingerbread Houses NOR the painted wrapping paper!

Good grief! I never realized what torture making a gingerbread house is to two sugar addicts. Who's idea was this thing? They liked decorating the house, but were WAY more interested in eating the candy. Pumkin Pecan Dessert

Just made this dessert for tonight. It is SO good! I made it in mason jars, but you don't have to.

Recipe:

1 can (15 oz) pumpkin
1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
3 eggs
3/4 cu sugar
4 tspns pumpkin pie spice

1 boxed cake mix
1 1/2 cups chopped pecans
3/4 cup butter, melted

whipped cream or vanilla ice cream, for serving

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350
2. In a large bowl, add the first 5 ingredients, and whisk together.

If you're making this in mason jars:
3. Spray jars
4. Pour 1/2 cup pumpkin into jars.
5. Sprinkle two rounded tbspns dry cake mix next.
6. Then sprinkle one rounded tbspn chopped pecans in each jar (I left these out)
7. Pour one tbspn melted butter on top.
8. Bake for 40 minutes.

"Why are you on the computer SO MUCH?"

Sorry for the lack of updates. But when my buddy said, "Mommy, why are you on the computer so much?", I realized I needed to slow down. Obviously I have to do some computer work throughout the day, but I'm trying to do it all when my kiddos are asleep or busy! Thank you Lord for the honesty of children!

On another similar note, Hutch and I met with Bubba's behavior specialist yesterday. As always, it was so encouraging. The most encouraging thing he always reminds us of is:

there is a scale of children: really easy ones on one side and really difficult ones on the other side. They are typically born this way, and very rarely is it because of something the parents did:) You could tell kinda early on which side they were on. Sissy is good proof that it's not all our fault. She really does listen and have a joyful heart.

Bubba is definitely on the difficult side of the scale, and he'll probably never make his way to the easy side. But, maybe a couple jumps closer to it:)

Through Dr. Burt's methods and advice, we feel encouraged once again! And, the most encouraging of all is that he will outgrow most of the difficulties we deal with (when he gains self control)...not that we should ignore them...at least we know there's light at the end of the tunnel.

One more quick thing (before everyone wakes up!): the main reason Bubba is perfect at school and terrible at home is because he feels SAFE at home.

Playground Fun

When our family was in town, we hung out a lot at the playground. I often think my kids live in a dream world. The playground is 20 steps from our house, so we go there every day of their lives! It's fun to see our visitors enjoy it too!

May I Be Vulnerable?

After my last post on my precious, tender-hearted boy, I feel a need to be vulnerable!! I realize in this blog community we are good at painting pretty pictures. We seem to mention all the wonderful things because at the end of the day, that's honestly what we remember. But, let me just share the ugly.

We have had (and still continue to have) LOTS of rough patches with Bubba. He rarely listens the first time. He argues about almost everything. He tests every water with us. He is indeed the most tender-hearted 5 yr old boy I've ever known, but he is a complete handful EVERY.SINGLE.DAY. (Not to fear though: if you invited him over, or if he spent a day with a babysitter or Grandma, he'd totally obey and be that tender boy. He is exclusively disobedient and spirited with just me and Hutch! Even his teacher was shocked to know he acts this way at home!)

Yesterday a wise neighbor encouraged me to pray about every single thing as Bubba presents it. I've read so many books and implemented so many plans that I do feel like I've thrown my hands up and given up! Obviously God made Bubba AND made Hutch and me his parents. God knows Bubba better than we do. So, I'm practicing that today. "Lord, how do I respond to that?"

Here's an example of his spirit most days when things don't go his way. Notice he's JUST gotten home from school (it starts the second we get in the car!)

I do know this: one day there will be no more pain. Hopefully on Earth, but definitely in Heaven! Here's a song that's spoken to my heart lately.

Our Bubba & His Gal

For a couple months now, Bubba has talked about his gal, "Natalie with Diabetes". Being the very tender-hearted boy he is, he has been terribly compassionate towards Natalie. (Let me insert here that he is very tender and empathetic, BUT his teacher also told us he could be more gentle on the playground! Ironic.)

Natalie & Bubba are truly like an old married couple. He stands near her in line (even when he has to cut); he tells Coach Rose if she needs to go potty; he helps open her Capri Suns at lunch; he prays for her and her diabetes. He even tries to wear the same color shirt as her (I guess when you have to wear solid polos every day, that's as fun as it gets!)

Mrs. K, Bubba's teacher, told us about how sweet he is to her at school. She said that she's had to tell Natalie that "the teachers can help you too, not just 'Bubba'".

Anyway, we planned a playdate with Natalie after school yesterday. They were giddy and just played near each other at the playground!

Kindergarten Conference

We had Bubba's Kindergarten conference this past week. It was great! I actually live for those kinds of things. Being a SAHM, I can't help myself!

A couple nuggets of things that made us smile, from Mrs. K herself:

-critical thinker, creative, great communicator: signs of gifted-ness
-very bright- she tries to challenge him daily by making him do more.
-so terribly empathetic- hurts for others worse than they hurt for themselves
-rough on playground (doesn't go with above statement, but I guess we're all a mix of things.)
-leader (which can seem bossy at times)
-teachable: he often likes to tell Mrs. K another way of doing something (ie: critical thinker), but as soon as she says "No", he says "yes maam". Insert laughing here if you know our Bubba!!

I love this post on How to Prepare Your Child for Kindergarten. It's an Outside the Box type post.

I've been trying to read more and talk about life more with Sissy. As you can imagine, with a strong-willed/verbal/communicative older brother, she's always fallen under the radar. So, in realizing that Kindergarten is NO JOKE, I'm trying to already prepare her for what's to come in 3 years!!
